  • Research interests include partner violence, child abuse and neglect, disadvantaged children with poverty and disability, and internal migration in the Chinese mainland
  • SRFS project — to be conducted in five East Asian cities, namely Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, and Taipei. The primary research question is whether social policy, health and social services are ready to handle family poly-victimization. The approach of this project is holistic and family-based, enabling the understanding of family poly-victimization, of which victims are at higher risk

  • Family Polyvictimization and Social Policy Responses in East Asian Societies

Award Citation

Prof. Edward Chan is a Fulbright Scholar committed to preventing family violence through the development of high-impact and socially relevant research. He is an internationally leading scholar in family violence studies and is the first scholar around the globe to examine family poly-victimization. His research expertise includes child and family polyvictimization, disadvantaged children with poverty and disability, and internal migration in the Chinese mainland. 

 

An outstanding scholar with intellectual rigor and passion for his research, Prof. Chan is conferred the title “RGC Senior Research Fellow” by the Research Grants Council in 2022. He received the Senior Scholar Award, RGC-Fulbright Hong Kong Research Scholar Program in 2013-14, and was awarded as an outstanding scholar by the RGC Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme in 2016. His international leadership was recognized by being nominated as the first social work academia board member of the Academy on Violence and Abuse, an international health professional association based in the USA. He has also been appointed as an Honorary Professor of the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, and Yonsei University, Seoul. 

 

Prof. Chan excels in his research, and his academic outputs stand out among social scientists. He has authored over 200 research publications in health and social sciences and has been sustainably awarded large and competitive research grants from local and international funding agencies. Prof. Chan’s excellence in scholarship has been consistently recognized as one of the top 2% scientists worldwide, according to Stanford University report published in 2019, 2020, and 2021. Compared to scholars in related fields, including social sciences, he is ranked top 1% among social scientists in 2020.
