Biography

  • Chair Professor in School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong
  • Research focuses on trace metal ecotoxicology and biogeochemistry in aquatic systems, and more recently, on nanotoxicology and marine microplastics toxicology, as well as marine fishery resource management
  • SRFS project — to employ various innovative methodologies to elucidate the biokinetics, trafficking, and biodynamics (toxicity) of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in representative aquatic animals. By visualizing and quantifying the "black-box" of MNPs in marine animals, this project will contribute significantly to multidisciplinary research encompassing material chemistry (aggregated-induced emission), molecular/cellular biology (single-cell RNA sequencing), physiology, and mathematical modeling, all within the ecologically and environmentally relevant contexts
  • Awards and Honours:
    • RGC Senior Research Fellow (2024)
    • First Prize in Environmental Protection Science and Technology Award, China (2016)
    • Elected Fellow of Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (UK-based, International) (2013)

Project Title

  • Biokinetics, Trafficking, and Biodynamics of Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Aquatic Animals

Award Citation

Professor Wang Wenxiong is currently the TUYF Named Chair Professor of Oceanography/Chair Professor of Environmental Toxicology, Associate Dean in the School of Energy and Environment, and the Director of the Research Centre for Oceans and Human Health at City University of Hong Kong. He studied Marine Biology at Xiamen University, China, and received in 1996 a Doctor of Philosophy in Coastal Oceanography from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, the United States. Professor Wang has been working in Hong Kong as a faculty member since 1997.

Professor Wang’s research focuses on trace metal ecotoxicology and biogeochemistry in aquatic systems, and more recently, on nanotoxicology and marine microplastics toxicology, as well as marine fishery resource management. His research aims at a combination of fundamental and applied ecotoxicology that will contribute to the management and protection of marine environments.

Professor Wang has authored over 620 peer-reviewed publications on subjects related to the ecotoxicology. He is the corresponding or first author of the majority of his publications. His laboratory has trained numerous graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars. He has served in numerous international journals as editor, associate editor, and editorial board member. His work is widely cited (over 30,000 times). He received the prestigious Overseas Distinguished Young Scientist Award from the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation in 2002, the Biwako Prize for Ecology in Japan in 2003, the Changjiang Chair Professorship in 2006, the First Prize in Natural Science from the Ministry of Education in China in 2009, the First Prize in Science and Technology from Guangdong Providence in 2009, and the First Prize in the Environmental Protection Science and Technology Award in 2016. He is an Elected Fellow of both the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, and the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
