Award Citation

Tong Yang received his PhD degree in 1993 from the University of California, Davis. After one year post-doctoral fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, he joined the City University of Hong Kong in 1994 and was promoted to Chair professor of Mathematics in 2007. He was elected to be a fellow of the European Academy of Sciences in 2018. He has been a visiting chair professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2013 and an honorary professor of Guangxi University since 2019.

Tong Yang has been working in the fields of partial differential equations and kinetic theory with highly regarded achievements. He has made important contributions to hyperbolic conservation laws, fluid dynamic phenomena in kinetic models, boundary layer theories and high Reynolds number limits. For example, the newly introduced generalized entropy functional named Liu-Yang functional in research literatures is even new for the Burgers equation, therefore, is an important contribution to the shock wave theory. He authored more than 180 papers in refereed journals with remarkable diversity and depth.

The awards and distinctions that he has received include the State Natural Science Award (2nd class) of China in 2012, the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship in 2011, the Changjiang Chair Professorship by the Ministry of Education of China in 2005, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2004 and the Morningside Silver Medal of Mathematics in the first ICCM in 1998.

He served as one of the editors-in-chief of Analysis and Applications (2013-17) and is one of the founding editors-in-chief of Kinetic and Related Models in 2008, and he also sits in the editorial advisory board of London Mathematical Society: Bulletin, Journal and Transactions. He was the President of Hong Kong Mathematical Society 2016-2020 and now serves as a member-at-large of the society.
