Award Citation

The SRFS Fellowship is awarded to Professor Xing Guoliang in recognition of his sustained contributions to embedded AI systems and autonomous driving. Professor’s pioneering research develops scalable, intelligent systems that integrate cutting-edge artificial intelligence with real-world deployments, especially in infrastructure-assisted autonomous driving and healthcare. Through interdisciplinary work that balances theoretical rigor with practical deployability, he has advanced multimodal perception and robust vehicle–infrastructure interaction frameworks, laying essential foundations for next-generation autonomous driving solutions that prioritize safety, efficiency, and scalability.

Professor Xing’s innovations empower resource-constrained devices—such as sensors, personal wearables, and vehicles—with sophisticated AI capabilities, enabling intelligent decision-making in large-scale cyber-physical environments. Over the past decade, he has led transformative projects that incorporate LiDAR, event cameras, radar, and foundation models to enhance perception, semantic understanding, and adaptive communication between infrastructure and vehicles. His contributions have been widely recognized, including election as a Fellow of both the ACM and the IEEE—the world’s largest professional societies in computing and electrical engineering—six Best Paper Awards at prestigious international conferences, US National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the CUHK Research Excellence Award.

His funded SRFS project, “Multi-Modal Perception Fusion and Interaction for Infrastructure-Assisted Driving Systems,” introduces a novel vehicle–edge–cloud architecture for seamless multi-sensor fusion and real-time inference. The system will be rigorously validated through large-scale experiments on a roadside infrastructure testbed at CUHK, in collaboration with industry partners to ensure real-world applicability and commercialization potential.

Beyond his technical achievements, Professor Xing is deeply committed to mentoring emerging researchers and cultivating an innovative ecosystem in AI systems and smart mobility. This fellowship recognizes his holistic impact on technological progress and talent development, advancing Hong Kong’s ambition to become a global hub for intelligent transportation and AI innovation.
